Your ears don’t just hear. They influence how you balance. In our Harrogate clinic, we can assess the causes of dizziness, vertigo or balance problems and provide suggestions.
Being balanced involves having good eyesight, and a stable base in our feet. The body’s vestibular system needs to be in good health too. This collection of structures in your inner ear are what give you the sense of being right-side up or upside down.
If you feel like you need more help to improve your balance, we can offer one-to-one sessions tailored to your needs. These can also be helpful if you’re concerned that a relative or loved one needs more attention than their GP or specialist can offer.
Balance problems might indicate that something needs addressing in parts of the body other than your ears. We work closely with an experienced Ear, Nose and Throat specialist and will refer you directly to him.
This is an inner ear condition. Sufferers report sudden attacks of tinnitus [link to Services/ tinnitus], hearing loss, pressure deep within the ear or feeling like the room is spinning. You can find out more on NHS - Ménière's disease.
Your hearing and balance can be affected if the labyrinth, a delicate structure deep inside your ear, becomes inflamed through an infection. There are more details on NHS – Labyrinthitis.
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is triggered when you move a certain way. It can make you feel like you’re getting off a playground roundabout, or are being thrown backwards. It's caused when tiny chalk crystals find their way into the wrong part of the inner ear. Find out more on the Ménière's Society BPVV Vertigo page.
